Ashton Memorial
Built by a rich guy quite a while ago. His name was Lord Ashton and he made a fortune in the textile business. I think it was intended as a memorial to his first wife. I suspect it is the highest point in Lancaster. You can certainly see it from just about anywhere. Just behind the memorial is the Butterfly House which has a lot of butterflies in it live ones fluttering menacingly about, just waiting to be released like a plague on the good citizens of Lancashire. Lord Ashton also has his name on a great big castle-looking house called Ashton Hall which is now the clubhouse of the Lancaster Golf Club.
